Having conversations about books
Having a conversation about what your child is reading is as important as them doing the reading. Talking about books helps readers to think through tricky or confusing parts, deepen their understanding of the text, and adds some enjoyment that they can bond with you over a good book.
5 Steps to starting a conversation about reading:
Step 1. Ask your child what they read (or are reading)
Step 2. Do/did you like that book? Why?
Step 3. If you have read the book tell them what you think of it...
If you have not read the book ask your child if they think you will like it
Step 4. Have them share a favorite part with you, by reading it to you or summarizing it and what they liked about that part.
Step 5. JUST KEEP TALKING, one small question can lead to a million more!
